Playground Love

For the last three years of highschool, I was in love with a girl. I thought about her all the time, but I was woefully shy and couldn’t bring myself to tell her. So I wrote her an anonymous poem instead.

The last days of highschool were summery.

In your hazel-green eyes I sail,
Like a mariner lost at sea.
Obeying the tide and blowing gale,
Veering towards the rocks I plea.

Embrace and save me from harm,
You can prevent my rocky demise.
Onto my sails you cast your charm,
Until above the waves I rise.

But then he suddenly appears,
And of my sails you do let go.
Now I drown in the flood of tears,
As you and he into the sunset flow.

In the poem I left her a secret message formed by the first letter of each verse. I don’t know where she is today. And whether or not she knows who the poem was from, I’ll never know.

So have I. But now it's time to scream.
