Breaking the Law

Jude takes a bow.

When I was in London last summer, Corinne and I went to see Jude Law play Hamlet at Wyndham’s Theater on Charing Cross Road. We were told that the play was booked solid until the end of the its three-month run, but we sauntered into the lobby like we owned the place and grabbed the last two tickets five minutes before the matinee show began. (OK I lie, we begged, groveled, and at least one of us had to flash the ticket manager to get in).

Jude took a sad song and made it better.

Whichever story you choose to believe (I can concoct a thousand more and anyway my memory is quite hazy), the end result is we got to see England’s Most Handsome Actor (Corinne: “Yay!”) play the Prince of Denmark (Meedo: “Yay!”) Hamlet is probably my favorite Shakespeare after Romeo and Juliet (yes I’m a sap).

Although it was abridged (most modern productions of Hamlet are shortened because, being Shakespeare’s longest play, it would take over four hours to perform in its entirety), and despite Ophelia being jarringly over-played, I loved it. Law’s performance was mannered but not stylized, modern but not revisionist, deeply cathartic but not melodramatic. By the end I was so elated that when Law came on stage for the final bow, I pulled out my camera (which happened to have a rented 70200 mm lens on it, and that is one huge mofo) and snapped away, completely ignoring the usher staring daggers at me from the wings. It was totally barbaric and completely out of character for me to do so, but hey I was smitten.

When the lights came up, the usher came over and politely but sternly asked me to delete every single shot right then and there. I turned on my camera, deleted every other photo, and kept the rest. Do I regret doing that? Well today Samira pointed out that Law is up for a Tony Award for his brilliant performance. Now if I had to resort to less than honorable means to get a tiny piece of that for myself… well, in the words of Hamlet himself, “to sleep, perchance to dream, ay, there’s the rub.”

I am lost, and anxiously waiting your next post. And for the record, I never said I hated my pic! I indeed like being next to Jude holding a plastic bag semi purse, just saying Jude is more enjoyable for my eyes=)
